Safety tips for buying & selling used bicycles
A few simple habits make every deal safer and smoother for both sides.
Bicyclearena connects buyers and sellers; we do not take part in the sale, handle payments or inspect bikes. Every listing is reviewed before it goes live, but the final check is always yours. Please follow these guidelines.
Before you meet
- Read the whole listing: brand, model, year, condition, photos and the seller's notes.
- Ask for extra photos or a short video if you want to see a part more closely (frame number, drivetrain, brakes).
- Compare the asking price with similar listings and with the new price of the model. A price far below the market is worth a second question.
- Confirm the exact meeting place and time in advance, and tell a family member or friend where you are going.
- Keep your conversation with the other person clear and polite; both sides have the right to walk away.
Meeting in person
- Meet in a public, well-lit, busy place such as a cycle shop, mall entrance, cafe or housing-society gate, during daytime.
- Avoid isolated places and avoid inviting a stranger to your home. Bring a friend or family member along if you can.
- Never share personal information that is not needed for the sale, such as OTPs, bank passwords, card details or Aadhaar number.
- Trust your instincts. If anything feels off, you can end the meeting and leave.
Inspect the bicycle
- Take a test ride. Check that gears shift cleanly, brakes stop the bike firmly, and there is no wobble from the wheels, headset or pedals.
- Look at the frame, fork and welds for cracks, dents or rust. Carbon frames deserve extra attention around joints and the fork.
- Check tyres, rims, chain, cassette and brake pads or discs for wear, as these are the parts that cost money to replace.
- Compare the bike with the listing: brand, model, wheel size, gears, brakes and colour should match what was advertised.
- For an electric bike, check the battery, charger, motor and display, and ask how old the battery is and how far it runs on a charge.
- If you are not sure, take the bike to a local cycle mechanic for a quick check before paying.
Paperwork
- Ask for the original bill or invoice. It shows the bike's age and that the seller bought it.
- Match the frame number (usually stamped under the bottom bracket or on the head tube) with the bill, where one is shown.
- Ask for warranty cards, service records and the manual if available. For electric bikes, check whether the battery or motor warranty can be transferred.
- Collect any accessories included in the price (charger, lock, lights, spare keys) and check they are handed over.
- Consider writing a short note with the date, price, bike details and both parties' names and phone numbers, signed by both.
Payment
- Pay only after you have seen the bike and are happy with it, and pay in person: cash, or an instant UPI transfer made in front of the seller and confirmed on their phone.
- Do not pay any advance, token, delivery, "booking" or verification amount online before seeing the bike.
- Be careful with requests to pay through links, QR codes or apps you did not choose. A QR code is for paying money, never for receiving it.
- Sellers: hand over the bike only after the money has actually reached your account or you hold the cash. A screenshot of a payment is not confirmation.
- Counting cash carefully and checking notes is normal and fine.
Things to be cautious about
- A very low price, or a story that creates pressure to decide quickly.
- Someone who refuses to meet, or who wants to send a courier or transport agent and collect money first.
- A seller who cannot answer basic questions about the bike, or whose photos look copied from elsewhere.
- A buyer who offers more than the asking price, or asks you to share a code or open a link to "receive" payment.
- Requests to move the conversation entirely to another app straight away.
Tips for sellers
- Write an honest description and add clear photos. Mention faults and replaced parts; it avoids disagreements later.
- Keep your bill and service records ready, and clean the bike before the buyer arrives.
- Share only your phone number and email as listed. There is no need to give your full address before the meeting.
- Mark the listing as sold as soon as the deal is done, so you do not receive more enquiries.
Direct contact
Buyers and sellers deal with each other directly, by phone or email. Bicyclearena does not relay messages, hold money, arrange delivery or take part in the negotiation. Agree the price, the meeting place and the handover between yourselves, and keep a record of what was agreed. Contact details are shown only to signed-in visitors.
Contact consent
- By publishing a listing, the seller agrees that the phone number and email entered in the listing are shown to signed-in visitors so that interested buyers can reach them.
- Buyers may use these details only to ask about that bicycle. Please do not save them for marketing, share them with others, or contact the seller about anything unrelated.
- Be considerate with calls and messages: reasonable hours, no repeated contact after a seller says the bike is sold or not available.
- Sellers can edit or delete a listing at any time from My listings, and marking it sold removes the contact details from the page.
- See our Privacy Policy for how we handle your information.
Liability
Bicyclearena is a platform where individuals list bicycles. We are not the buyer or the seller, and we do not own, inspect, store or ship any listed bicycle. We review listings before they go live, but we cannot guarantee that a listing is accurate, that a bicycle is safe or roadworthy, or that a buyer or seller will complete a deal. Each user is responsible for their own listing, their own checks and their own decisions. To the extent permitted by law, Bicyclearena is not liable for loss or damage arising from a deal between users. Details are in our Terms & Conditions.
Legality
- List only a bicycle that you own, or are authorised by the owner to sell. Items that are stolen, or that you have no right to sell, are not allowed.
- Describe the bicycle honestly. Listings for counterfeit or misrepresented products, or with copied photos, are not allowed.
- All deals must follow Indian law. Buyers who suspect a bicycle may be stolen should not buy it; asking for the original bill and matching the frame number helps.
- We may remove a listing or restrict an account that breaks these rules, and we may share information with authorities where the law requires it.
- This page is general guidance, not legal advice.
Something not right?
If a listing looks misleading, the details do not match the bike, or a conversation made you uncomfortable, use the "Report this listing" link on the listing page and our team will review it.
