Best Gear Cycles in India: What Gears You Actually Need

Updated 2026-11-01

A gear cycle (gear wali cycle) lets you change how hard each pedal stroke is. That makes hills and long rides easier. More gears does not always mean a better cycle, so here is what to check.

What "21-speed" means

21-speed usually means 3 chainrings at the front and 7 sprockets at the rear (3 x 7). Many gears overlap, so you do not use all 21 separately. The useful part is the total range from easy to hard.

Freewheel vs cassette

Budget cycles use a screw-on freewheel. Better cycles use a cassette on a freehub, which is stronger and easier to service. If the spec lists a "cassette", it is generally the better setup.

Shimano groupsets, in order

Common entry groups in India, lowest to highest: Tourney, Altus, Acera, Alivio, Deore. Higher groups shift more crisply and last longer. A good lower group is better than a badly adjusted higher one.

When a single speed is the better choice

On flat roads and for short commutes a single speed has fewer parts to fail and needs almost no tuning. Gears are worth it for slopes, flyovers, headwinds and distance.

Keep it working

  • Clean and oil the chain every few weeks.
  • Do not shift under heavy load.
  • Have the derailleurs adjusted at the first service.

FAQ

How many gears should I choose?

For city and mixed riding, 7 to 21 speeds are plenty. Quality of the components matters more than the count.

Are gear cycles harder to maintain?

Slightly. They need chain care and periodic adjustment of the derailleurs and shifters.
