Best Electric Cycles in India (2026): How to Choose

Updated 2026-11-01

Electric cycles (e-bikes) are the most searched cycle type in India. Prices, motors and batteries vary a lot, and brochure range figures rarely match real use. This guide covers what to check before you buy.

Motor: power and position

In India an electric cycle with a motor of up to 250W and assisted speed up to 25 km/h is generally treated as a bicycle, so it needs no registration or licence. Anything above that is treated as a motor vehicle. Check the motor rating on the spec sheet and the current rules before you buy.

Most budget electric cycles use a hub motor in the rear or front wheel. It is simple and cheap. More expensive models use a mid-drive motor at the crank, which feels more natural and climbs better but costs more.

Battery: Wh matters more than volts or Ah alone

Battery capacity in watt-hours (Wh) is volts multiplied by amp-hours. A 36V 10Ah battery is 360Wh. More Wh means more range, all else equal. Compare Wh, not Ah, across models.

Check whether the battery is removable. A removable pack can be charged indoors or at your desk, a fixed pack needs the cycle near a socket. Full charge times of around four to six hours are common.

Range: treat claimed numbers as a maximum

Claimed range is measured in ideal conditions: a light rider, flat road, low assist. Hills, headwinds, heavy loads and throttle-only riding cut it, often by a third or more. If you need 30 km a day, look for a claimed range well above that.

Pedal assist vs throttle

Pedal assist adds power while you pedal and gives the best range and the most cycle-like feel. A throttle drives the motor without pedalling, which is convenient in traffic but drains the battery faster. Some models offer both. Check which one a model has on the spec page.

Other things to check

  • Brakes: disc brakes are strongly preferred on a heavier cycle.
  • Weight: electric cycles are heavy, which matters if you carry yours upstairs.
  • Service: pick a brand with service or a dealer in your city. A battery or controller fault on an unsupported cycle is expensive.
  • Warranty: look at separate cover for battery, motor and frame.

FAQ

Do electric cycles need a licence in India?

Low-speed electric cycles with a motor up to 250W and assisted speed up to 25 km/h are generally treated as bicycles. Check the current rules and the model specification before buying.

How far can an electric cycle go on one charge?

Claimed ranges are typically 25 to 80 km. Real range is lower and depends on rider weight, terrain, assist level and battery size.

Is a pedal-assist or throttle cycle better?

Pedal assist gives better range and feels more like riding a cycle. A throttle is easier in stop-and-go traffic. Many riders prefer having both.
